Intimacy From The Inside Out (IFIO)
“In IFIO, we aim for partners to disagree respectfully, communicate courageously, apologize from the heart, forgive freely, and stay connected”. - Toni Herbine-Blank
Intimacy From The Inside Out (IFIO) is a model of couples therapy that builds on the foundation of Internal Family Systems (IFS), while also incorporating insights from psychodynamic theory, systems thinking, and neuroscience. It’s an experiential approach developed to bring the principles of IFS into the context of intimate relationships, using the relationship itself as a path for both individual and relational healing and growth.
At its core, IFIO is based on the belief that each person has access to an essential internal Self that holds the capacity for resilience, self-love and emotional regulation. This model offers a non-pathologizing and compassionate framework, helping individuals understand their life experiences within a safe and collaborative therapeutic space.
In an IFIO session, both partners are guided into a process of cultivating a deeper, more compassionate relationship with themselves. This inner connection forms the foundation for staying grounded and emotionally present - with oneself and each other - even during times of difficult communication. Therapy sessions move fluidly between exploring each partner’s internal landscape and supporting authentic, relational interaction between the two.
By gently inviting each person to explore their inner world and own reactivity, IFIO helps couples envision a relationship dynamic that includes: 1) clear and respectful communication, 2) meaningful repair after conflict, 3) honoring the needs of both individuals and the partnership, and 4) creating space for authentic, heartfelt connection.
